How to Submit Articles for Consideration for The GNPA Website

If you or your committee wishes to submit an article on some aspect of nature photography for publication on the blog (not in the digital newsletter), please submit it to GNPAwebarticle@gnpa.org

  • The completed and proofed article should be submitted as a Word document.
  • A typical article should be between 300 and 900 words.
  • It should be submitted at least two weeks prior to when you want it to appear on the website.
  • It should have a title, a 1-2 sentence subtitle explaining what it’s about (optional), and an optional short bio of the author (1-3 sentences).
  • A photo of the author may also be included along with the bio.
  • If you want to include photos to accompany the article:
    • Photos to be included should be jpegs, sized to a max of 1400 pixels WIDE or 900 pixels HIGH at a maximum of 120 DPI.
    • The color space should be sRGB.
    • Captions can be included in the filename, with the caption first.
    • If you wish, you can show where the photos should appear in the Word document by embedding them, but that is not required. If they are embedded in the document, please also submit them separately as attachments.
  • If you would like the article to be publicized to GNPA members, please indicate that in your submission.

How To Publicize Your GNPA Event

To get help in publicizing GNPA events, contests, or activities on the GNPA website or in an email, please follow the process outlined below as provided by the Communications Committee. All requests should be submitted to GNPApromotion@gnpa.org

For events, make sure that you allow plenty of time for the event to be publicized, and provide ample opportunity for potential participants to plan. Day trips may need only a month or less notice and usually will need only an entry in the Meetup calendar rather than a supporting announcement/article on the GNPA website. Overnight trips, however, should offer 4-6 months’ notice, and major trips that involve air travel and multi-night accommodation should be published 9-12 months in advance.

The article describing the event/competition/activity should be submitted at least two weeks before it needs to appear on the GNPA website. The submission must include any photos that you want to accompany the article (but no more than four), plus all the basic information (who, what, where, when) about the event. Also, indicate which photo should be used as the lead image. If you’d like the event to be publicized on GNPA social media, please indicate that in your email.

In addition to a blog/website article, it may sometimes be possible to send out an email to all GNPA members with info about the event. The text of that email should be submitted along with the text of the blog article. Remember, short emails with a brief subject line will get a better response than long ones. Include only the basic information; follow-up emails with additional details can be sent to those who will actually participate.

Make sure to establish a point of contact, and provide an email address, whom interested parties can contact with questions. If the point of contact is different than the person submitting the article, the communications committee must have that person’s contact information. A point of contact must be included for the article to be published.

The basic article that is submitted should include all event details, including travel and accommodations, fee and deadlines, what is covered by the fee, and what is not. It should specify that you must be a current GNPA member to participate. The article must also include a link to the registration page for your event, which must be set up by the Program Committee member responsible for registration. A working registration page is required before the article can be published.

Here is a checklist for articles:

  • The article should be submitted as a Word Document
  • Link to registration page set up by program committee
  • Point of contact for questions, along with a valid email address
  • Event description and location
  • Date and time
  • Sales pitch (why should you attend)
  • Skill-level appropriateness
  • Any fees
  • What is covered by the fee, and what is not
  • Photo(s) should be attached. These should be jpegs sized to a max 1400 pixels WIDE or 900 pixels HIGH, at 120 dpi maximum.
  • Captions should be a part of the file name
  • The total word count should be 300 words or less
  • The following items should be on the registration page that was created in MemberClicks (and also included in your article submission):
    • Cancelation policy and deadlines
    • Refund policy
    • Details about the waiting list, if any

You must submit the article two weeks before it needs to appear on the blog or in an email blast to members.
