Spring in the Smokies. With Roger Trentham and former GNPA President Horace Hamilton

Spring in the Smokies. With Roger Trentham and former GNPA President Horace Hamilton

Join Smoky Mountain native, and two-time featured speaker at our GNPA Smokies Weekend, Roger Trentham for two days of unique Smokies photography opportunities.  Also, former GNPA President Horace Hamilton will lead the group on two separate sunset photo adventures, weather permitting, and an afternoon of stream and flower photography.

Monday April 20 we will meet at the Flapstax Restaurant parking lot (956 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN) at 6:45pm on Monday April 20 and depart at 7:00pm for sunset shooting on the new section of Foothills Parkway near Wear’s Valley.

Tuesday April 21 will be spent photographing the best Spring wildflowers in a unique setting.  Here you will photograph a variety of wildflowers such as trillium, jack-in-the pulpit, wild geranium, dwarf crested iris as well as other macro subjects such as mosses, ferns and mushrooms.

Learn to utilize artificial lighting and backgrounds, learn focus stacking techniques and how these techniques and aids can be used in the field. Around 1:00pm we will break for lunch and reconvene at 2:30pm at the Chimney’s Picnic Area for more flower and stream photography.  We will have an early dinner and at about 7:00pm head for sunset at Morton Overlook on Newfound Gap Rd.

Wednesday April 22 you will have the opportunity few other workshops can offer, you will meet and photograph true Mountain Folk at an original Smoky Mountain log cabin.  We will arrive at the cabin before sunrise and through the innovative use of led lighting we will photograph the cabin as it was when the original inhabitants began their day.   We will then spend the remainder of the day photographing other historic structures, wildflowers and mountain streams.  The workshop will end at 2:00pm on Wednesday.

Group size is limited to ten (10) participants with a minimum of 5 required to hold the event.

Workshop Dates

Tuesday with Roger begins at 8:00 a.m. April 21. We will shoot until 1:00pm and then break for lunch.  At 2:30 we will reconvene at the entrance to the Chimney’s Picnic Area where we will continue shooting wildflowers until about 5:30pm. We will have an early dinner in Gatlinburg and meet at the Sugarlands visitor center parking lot on Hwy 441 just inside the park. At 7:00pm we will depart for the 30 minute drive to Morton Overlook for sunset photography.

On Wednesday April 22 we will begin at 6:00 a.m.  Those who register will be given meeting locations for Tuesday and Wednesday morning via email.  Both day one and two locations are a short distance from Gatlinburg.

We have identified a reasonably priced motel, Quality Inn, 401 Hemlock Rd. Gatlinburg. (865-436-6166).  Rooms are available starting at $53.99 per night with two Queen beds. We do not have rooms blocked off so do not delay in making reservations.  You may stay at another hotel if you wish. Gatlinburg has 1000’s of motel and cabin options.  Any motel with a Gatlinburg address will be convenient.

We SO appreciate everyone who joined us in Townsend for our four-day-weekend, November photography trip!

There was so much to see and experience and capture as we explored the Great Smoky Mountains, including favorite locals such as Cades Cove and Elkmont and Tremont and beyond.

So many fabulous images were captured. Many were shared through our Smokies Weekend Competition–winners in each category and our Grand Prize Winner all received fantastic gift cards as their prizes. Look for future blog posts spotlighting each category!

We’ve also collected images for our GNPA Facbook Page Album–be sure to check them out on our GNPA Facebook Page.

A special shout out goes to Art Stiles, our Griffin Chapter coordinator, who says he is, “…so looking forward to next year. I managed to get eight of the Griffin chapter members to attend this year, and I expect to increase that next year, after everyone hears what a great time we all had.”

An exciting trend: we had TONS of first-time attendees this year! We were honored to share with these “newbies” all the things we love best about the Great Smoky Mountains in November. We can’t wait to see everyone again next year, when we hope to welcome even more first-timers to one of our premiere annual membership events.

Speaking of which… Drum roll please…

Our 2020 Dates are already confirmed!

Join us next year, so you don’t miss out on the fun!

Feb 7-14, 2020 Yellowstone In Winter

Feb 7-14, 2020 Yellowstone In Winter

The much anticipated Winter, 2020 trip to Yellowstone National Park will be hosted again this winter by Bob Waters and  Chris Dekle. You won’t want to miss it. Our past 6 trips have been loved by all who went and we have a lot of former participants who are waiting to go again on this trip.

DATES In-Park: February 8th through the 13th, 2020.

This trip sells out quickly so don’t delay

Because of new insurance requirements, you must be a GNPA member before you can register for the trip.

Please note, registration will open in August. We will announce in advance when it will open.

  • Five full days shooting inside Yellowstone NP in new tundra-tired buses.  Each bus holds 13 people, however, we are limiting the number of people per bus so there will be plenty of room for you and your gear.
  • Park Entrance Fees. But bring you National Park Pass if you have one, it may be needed.
  • Lodging at the 3 Bear Lodge, Double occupancy. Single rooms are available.
  • A breakfast burrito to go in the morning and coffee for those staying at the 3 Bear Lodge.  An optional deli box lunch can be individually purchased each day from the 3 Bear Restaurant. (Order the day before and pay in advance.)
  • Your transportation from Bozeman, MT to the West Yellowstone and back to Bozeman.

What’s the trip like? Watch Videos From Prior Trips What not included:

  • Your travel to Bozeman, MT and back.
  • Meals. Your food and bar bill are on you for the entire trip. We’ve found people want to eat differently and one size doesn’t work.  With lots of places in W. Yellowstone to eat, people can easily pick what and when they want to eat without being shoehorned into one plan.
  • THIS IS NOT A PHOTO WORKSHOP.  It is a group rate trip put together for the benefit of the GNPA members so we can go to great places and photograph. We do not offer formal instruction on these trips.  Of course, if you do need help with about anything photographic, our members all pitch in and help you with any questions you have and give you good suggestions if you ask.

Trip Fee:

  • Double Occupancy: $2,395 per person You are responsible for finding a roommate. (8 rooms available).
  • Single Occupancy: $2,945. Maximum of 4 rooms available.
  • Staying in a Different Location Discount: $595.00 (If you elect to stay elsewhere or bring your own motor home, igloo, etc.)

This trip is a bargain. There are other trips similar to this are going for $5,000 or more at the same time of the year. To reserve your place, a deposit of $900 must be paid by September 15, 2019 with the balance due by October 31, 2019. You can cancel up until December 1, 2019 with a $600 cancellation fee.  There are no refunds After November 30, 2019 unless someone can be found to take your place. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PURCHASE TRIP INSURANCE  Unexpected emergencies do come up and you should buy this inexpensive insurance and protect yourself. Google “trip insurance” to find all the options.

Arrival Information: You must be in Bozeman, MT, by 1:30PM Bozeman time on February 14th. Transportation will leave around 2:00PM for West Yellowstone. If you “miss the bus” you’ll need to arrange your own transportation to West Yellowstone. Additional Information

  • We will be staying at the Three Bears Inn. It has an excellent restaurant we have eaten in before and it’s close to a number of other places to eat.
  • We will eat lunch on the go while in the park since we stay in the park all day. If you would like to have a breakfast box made for you to carry along, you can arrange for them at the 3 Bear Restaurant when you get to the hotel.  You pay for what you want when you order.
  • The return trip to Bozeman will be the morning of Feb. 14, 2020 and be dropped of at the Bozeman Airport around 11am.
  • If you need to spend a night going or coming in Bozeman to make the airline connections work, we recommend you reserve a room at The Best Western Grantree Inn. Be sure to let us know so we can arrange for the bus to pick you up at the Grantree.
  • The space in the Tundra buses is limited. To ensure there is ample room for everyone, food and equipment, please try limit camera equipment to the following:
    • One Camera Bag
    • No more than 2 camera bodies
    • One big lens (500mm/600mm)
    • Tripod
  • We will send out a list of clothing and other helpful information later but what you wear when skiing will be fine.
